Hexafluo's Perfluoroisobutyronitrile Product Innovation Applications: Facilitating Green Upgrading of the Power Industry

Driven by the twin goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, the global "dual carbon" goals the power industry is accelerating its green transformation. As a new generation of environmentally friendly power insulating gas with low Global Warming Potential (GWP), perfluoroisobutyronitrile (C4F7N), with its significant advantages, has become a key driver in this process. The breakthrough progress made by Sanming Hexafluo, a core member of Capchem, in this field has injected strong impetus into the industry's transformation. In August 2023, China's first kiloton - level perfluoroisobutyronitrile industrial production line was officially put into trial production in Hexafluo, achieving the leap of the product from the laboratory to large-scale production. In November 2024, Hexafluo has successfully obtained the regular registration certificate for perfluoroisobutyronitrile [2,3,3,3-tetrafluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl) propionitrile] approved by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China, which has laid a solid foundation for the compliant and large - scale market application of the product.

Recently, innovative applications in the perfluoroisobutyronitrile (C4F7N) field have achieved significant progress, with successful implementation in multiple key power projects.

Assisting in the Successful Commissioning of the World's First 550 kV C4 Environmentally friendly Gas GIL

In the Anqing City, Anhui Province, 500 kV Rongsheng Substation Project, the world's first 550 kV perfluoroisobutyronitrile environmentally friendly gas insulated line (GIL) independently developed by Pinggao Electric, together with China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), State Grid Anhui Electric Power and other units, was successfully put into operation. This project uses the mixed gas of perfluoroisobutyronitrile and carbon dioxide supplied by Hexafluo as the insulating medium. It not only reduces the greenhouse effect by 97% compared with the traditional sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), but also achieves the breakthrough by matching conventional 550 kV SF₆ gas-insulated transmission lines in all three critical aspects: identical physical dimensions, equivalent electrical parameters, and identical operational performance.  Moreover, it is compatible with SF6 and SF6/N2mixed gas, providing an efficient and environmentally friendly solution for the gas replacement transformation of existing power stations and the construction of new power stations, and promoting the environmental upgrading of China's power grid transmission and transformation equipment to a new level.

Assisting in the Successful Commissioning of China's First 330 kV Environmentally friendly Circuit Breaker

Another important application lies in high-voltage circuit breakers. On August 9, China's first 330 kV C4 environmentally friendly gas circuit breaker was successfully put into operation at the 330 kV Haishiwan Substation of State Grid Lanzhou Power Supply Company. This equipment completely abandons the traditional potent greenhouse gas SFand uses the mixed gas composed of Hexafluo's perfluoroisobutyronitrile (C4F7N), O2 and CO2 as the arc-extinguishing and insulating medium. This innovative scheme not only ensures the excellent electrical performance and high reliability of the equipment, but also greatly reduces the carbon footprint of the insulating gas, significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and becomes a landmark achievement in the green upgrading of power grid equipment.

Hexafluo, relying on its independently developed green production technology, has continuously improved the production, detection and waste gas recovery system of perfluoroisobutyronitrile pure gas/mixed gas. Its products have been supplied in batches to major domestic and foreign power equipment enterprises and have won high recognition. As a leading enterprise in the field of perfluoroisobutyronitrile, Hexafluo will continue to adhere to the concept of "innovation-driven and green development", provide customers with better products and solutions with leading technical advantages and professional delivery services, and work with more partners to contribute to the green transformation of the power industry.
